Identify the Topic

Determine the main subject of your essay. For example, let’s say you are assigned an essay with the topic of “self-improvement.” On its own, “self-improvement” is too vague of a subject to build a strong thesis statement on. 

Narrow Your Focus

Choose a specific aspect of the topic to explore. Let’s assume you narrow the topic to “extracurricular activities for high school students.” While still falling under the umbrella of self-improvement, this topic is much more specific and provides a clear area for discussion. 

Formulate a Claim

Decide what you want to argue or prove about your topic. Now that you’ve narrowed down your focus, it’s time to determine what claim you want to make. Your claim should always be debatable. Because the assignment is focused on self-improvement, it’s likely you’ll want to argue that high school students benefit from participating in extracurricular activities. 

Support With Evidence

Writing a Thesis Statement

There is no one-size-fits-all format for a thesis statement, but it should typically follow this structure: 

  1. Topic: The subject you are writing about.  
  2. Claim: Your position or argument about the topic. It must be debatable. 
  3. Supporting Points: The main reason or evidence that supports your claim.
Here are two potential thesis statements that pertain to the above self-improvement example; let's break down what characteristics make one weak, and the other strong. 

Weak Thesis Statement  Strong Thesis Statement 
“Extracurricular activities can be good for high school students.”  “Extracurricular activities improve the lives of high school students because they provide essential life skills and offer opportunities for personal growth.” 

 

What Doesn’t Work  What Works
  • Vague Language - The phrase “can be good” is too vague. It doesn’t specify how extracurricular activities are beneficial or under what circumstances they might be good.
  • Weak Claim - The word “can” suggests uncertainty and does not present a strong, confident argument. 
  • No Supporting Evidence - The statement lacks supporting points that explain how or why extracurricular activities are good, leaving the reader without an understanding of the benefits. 
  • Clear and Specific - This thesis clearly states the benefits of extracurricular activities: they “improve the lives of high school students.”
  • Confident Claim - The use of “improve” presents a strong and assertive claim, indicating a strong position on the subject.
  • Included Benefits - Supporting reasons for the claim are provided, giving the reader a clear understanding of what will be discussed in the essay.

  • Be Specific: Avoid vague language and broad statements. Clearly express your essay’s main idea in precise terms. 
  • Take a Clear Position: Present a clear position that outlines your stance on the topic. This makes your thesis engaging and sets up a focused discussion. 
  • Be Concise: Aim for one or two sentences that encapsulate your main point without unnecessary words. 
  • Ensure Debatability: Make sure your thesis presents a claim that others might reasonably argue against. This allows the opportunity to foster critical thinking and discussion. 
  • Support With Evidence: Your thesis should introduce the evidence you will use to support your claim later in the essay. 
  • Align With Your Essay: Ensure that your thesis statement aligns with the content and direction of your essay. It should act as a roadmap, guiding your reader through your upcoming arguments.

  • Being Too Narrow: A thesis that’s too specific might limit your ability to write an interesting essay. Be sure your thesis allows room for detailed discussion. 
  • Making an Announcement: Avoid phrases such as, “This essay will discuss...” Integrate the main points into a cohesive, straightforward statement instead. 
  • Using First Person: A thesis statement should be objective and not include phrases like, “I believe,” or “in my opinion.” Maintain a formal and impersonal tone.
